Julian Housing has developed as a learning organisation over the past few years.  We have clear Induction and Foundation programmes based on National Standards.  We have set up various initiatives to encourage the sharing of expertise throughout the Project, such as Practice Development Groups and Training the Trainers courses.  This acknowledges that expertise does not reside solely in the Management Team, and gives everyone an opportunity to share and develop his or her skills.

We offer excellent placements for both social worker and nursing students.  There are three Social Worker Practice Teachers in the Project.

Motivational Interviewing
Aim:

To deliver a two-day training session on Motivational Interviewing.
This course will enable staff to assist substance users to free up their own motivations in order to overcome their ambivalence towards making changes in their lives.

Objectives

To explore different models of addiction and how these models impact on client motivation

To recognize ‘common traps’ that delay or prevent change

To learn the five basic motivational skills and have an opportunity to put these into practice

To understand the process of ‘Roadblocks’ and how these impact on client motivation

By the end of the session - to have incorporated a range of motivational techniques in practice

Basic drug Awareness
Aim:

to deliver a 2-day workshop on Substance Misuse

Objectives
By the end of the two days participants will

have an increased understanding of the social context of substance use

knowledge of the main substances of misuse, their effects and their legal status

have an understanding of dual diagnosis from the perspective of services and service users

know the signs and symptoms of overdose on depressant drugs and how to respond

 

Basic Self-Harm Awareness
Aim:

To deliver a one day workshop looking at the issue of self-harm

Objectives:

Staff will have an opportunity to develop a broader understanding of the prevalence of self harm and the reasons why people self harm

Staff will have an opportunity to explore how people respond to self-harm and share experiences of coming into contact with self-harming behaviour

Staff will have an opportunity to explore tools for working with and empowering people who self-harm

   

Drugs Policy Guidance

In addition to the above courses, consultancy is available for residential and outreach services looking to develop their Substance Use policies, in order to ensure a safe working environment for all, whilst ensuring that service users tenancies are not unnecessarily put at risk through their use of controlled substances.
